It is named after a village northeast of Glasgow, Scotland. At an elevation of 1089m (3573 ft), makes it the highest city in Canada. Airdrie is located about 30 km north of Calgary on Highway 2 and is situated at Calgary's northern doorstep. Airdrie is one of Alberta's best-kept secrets boasting a population of 21,000 residents and is fast becoming a "bedroom community" for Calgary, covering over 21 square kilometers. The first home was built in 1901, and by 1909 Airdrie was a village. By the mid-sixties, Airdrie had 1,000 residents. During the 70s and 80s Alberta oil boom, Airdrie quickly topped the 10,000 mark. In 1985, Airdrie became Alberta's 14th city. Airdrie is a place where everyone can enjoy a relaxing rural lifestyle while taking advantage of the complete urban amenities available. Airdrie has numerous restaurants, medical clinics, retail stores, professional services, and banks. Many Calgarians travel to Airdrie for its automobile dealers on its "low overhead" Auto Mile, and is the place where the RCMP block off the highway to Edmonton for bad winter snowstorms.
